More information:

The parade is held annually on New Year’s Day. Marching in the parade are local clubs competing in one of five categories: Comics, Wench Brigades, Fancies, String Bands, and Fancy Brigades. Philadelphia’s Mummers Parade is an old tradition. It directly evolved from 17th century Swedish settlers in the Philadelphia area who celebrated Christmas by masquerading, eating, drinking, chanting, and shooting firearms. More distantly, it has its roots earlier and is related to the Mummers Play tradition in Britain and Ireland.
