These are flushed daily by therise and fall of the tide, the influence of which is feltfor many miles above the city. In addition to thesenatural drains, side drains have been constructedby the Sanitary Department alongside most of thestreets. Into these flow the flood water after rain-fall, as well as the soiled water from the neighboringdwelling-houses. Many of the drains have now beenprovided with sluice-gates where they join canals;the gates are opened at low water, and thus thedrains are effectually flushed, the cleansing beingassisted by sweepers.
