The Clarks Fork Bottom lies in this* part ofthe valley, on the north side of the Yellowstone, extending from the rockybluffs east of the old settlement at Coulson, near the site of Billings, tothe hills which put into the river from outlying spurs of the Rocky Moun-tains, some thirty-five miles westward. The traveler, passing through the Yellowstone Valley, except during themonths of May and June, when vegetation is vividly green, is apt to rebelagainst the withered look of the grass. Lowland and highland alike areclothed with a russet garment, which the heat of summer has spread overthem. The mountains appear like colossal hay mows with the lush growthof bunch grass surging up their slopes, cured as it stands by the sun intothe best of hay, upon which herds fatten all the year round. The valley hasthe same sere tone, and the fringe of dark pines on the brow of the hillsdoes not relieve, but only serves to emphasize the prevailing tone of thelandscape.. 144 The Northern Pacific Railroad.
