The Whitechapel Art Gallery was founded in 1901 to 'bring great art to the people of the East End of London'. It was designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, who also designed the Horniman Museum in south London, and was financed by John Passmore Edwards. From the beginning it has been well known for experimentation and the avant-garde.
