The dramatic works of William Shakespeare : accurately printed from the text of the corrected copy left by the late George Steevens, Esq: with a glossary, and notes, and a sketch of the life of Shakespeare . who have devoted their whole lives, andtheir most vigorous talents, to revive his memory, and illustrate his writings. It is equally unfortunate, that we know as littleo£ the progress of his writings, as of his personal1 of Johnson and Steevens. history. The industry of his illustrators for thelast forty years, has been such as probably neverwas surpassed in the annals of literary investiga-tion ; yet so far are we from information of theconclusive or satisfactory kind, that even the orderin which his plays are written rests principally onconjecture, and of some of the plays usually printedamong his works, il is not yet determined whetherhe wrote the whole, or any part. We are, how-ever, indebted to the labours of his commentators, not only for much light thrown upon his obscuri-ties, but for a text purified from the gross blundersof preceding transcribers and editors; and it isalmost unnecessary to add, that the text of tjie fol-lowing volumes is that of the last corrected! the ition.
