The Detroit news: eighteen hundred and seventy-three, nineteen hundred and seventeen, a record of progress: . t rate of consumption. Warehouses elsewhere in the city contain thevast supplies which safeguard The News meantime, and these are tapped tokeep the storage pier in the basement filled. The loading of the pier is the first step in the efficient circular movement ofthe bulky raw material of the newspaper. The paper arrives on trucks, in theshipping room, and is lifted by electric hoists and dropped into a paper tunnelthrough which it rolls, on an elevated runway, to scales. After being weighed,it is rolled onto high iron cradle-trucks running on a miniature railway track thefull width of the pier, and deposited where needed. This pier is twenty-twoinches high at the back, and slopes toward the presses, where it is but eleveninches above floor level. The paper is thus able to move forward withoutinvolving man-power. Low trucks receive the rolls when they are called for,and speed them along supply tracks which completely loop the twenty-fourmagazine reels which supplement the press units..
