From 1894 to 1898 he was with business concerns in various capacities: he was manager of a commission com- pany in San Francisco, 1899-1900; pro- prietor of a commission company, with offices in San Francisco, Chicago, and Mexico City, 1900-1913. On May 14, 1913, Mr. Long was appointed Chief of the Division of Latin-American Affairs in the Department of State, Washington, D. <'.. and on July 29, 1914, he was appointed Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Pleni- potentiary to Salvador.
