The colonial Church of Our Lady of the Assumption was completed by Franciscan friars in 1751 in the town of Tecoh, Yucatan, Mexico. In 1842, John Lloyd Stevens, the archeological explorer and author of "Incidents of Travel in Yucatan" climbed this church tower to look for Mayan ruins in the surrounding jungle.
