July 22, 2013 - Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico - Tequila Peligroso Anejo-----Tequila is a distilled drink made in the Mexican state of Jalisco from the blue agave plant known for its long thin and pointed spiky type blue fronds. The volcanic soil in the state of Jalisco has been, since the time of the Aztecs, to be perfect for growing the famed beverage that can be had straight or in mixed drinks like the well known Margarita. The blue agave is harvested and prepared for making tequila by cutting off its fronds and baking the core or ''pina'' before shredding and pressing out the juice. Tequila is aged and sold in five categories according to the time spent in wood barrels before bottling---Blanco, Joven, Reposado, Anejo and Extra Anejo. Popular for its unique taste and strong alcoholic effect, books, television and film have help make tequila a commonly stocked drink in bars, hotels and restaurants across the world. For 2014, National Tequila Day will be celebrated on Thursday, July 24 with National Margarita Day to be celebrated on Sunday February 22. The cost of tequila ranges by brand with the common and well known distiller Jose Cuervo to rare boutique brands with limited bottling runs along with years of aging. A tequila shot costing $80 or $100 dollars would not be uncommon in swanky bars from Los Angeles to Paris or Moscow. (Credit Image: © David Bro/ZUMAPRESS.com)
