RMPPY50D–September 20, 2018 - Savanna Army Depot, Iowa, U.S. - A fence built by Wildlife Refuge Specialist Alan Anderson has a metel strip 12-inches above and below the ground surrounds an area created for a “head-start†program started in 2009 to help increase the number of Ornate box turtles in the former Savanna Army Depot. Ornate box turtles are native to the Midwest. Before 1980, they were found in 38 Illinois counties, but recent studies report them in only 15 counties, according to the USFWS. In October 2009, they were listed as a threatened species in Illinois, largely due to habitat loss.
