Thompson represented Kingston upon Hull in the House of Commons from 1835 to 1837 and was elected to represent Bradford in 1847.

She published the call for the first anti-slavery convention at Nantucket, at which Frederick Douglass made his first public speech. In 1838, when Gardner's pupil in the African School, Eunice Ross, was denied entrance to the new public Nantucket High School because of her race, she resigned her position and became involved in the fight for desegregation, which was achieved in the mid 1840s.
