The green-tinted spectacles worn by Olds were designed to protect the eyes from the intensity of Argand lamps, a type of indoor light used during the early 1800s. These lamps burned whale oil, and many people worried that its bright flames might damage eyesight.

RM2B01ATM–Japan: Four young women at their toilette. Hand-tinted photograph by Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934), c. 1880s. Kusakabe Kimbei was a Japanese photographer from Kofu, Kai Province. He worked initially with Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried as a photographic assistant and colourist, before opening his own workshop in Yokohama in 1881. By 1893 his studio had become one of the leading Japanese studios to service Western customers, with many of his photos featuring depictions of Japanese women in the traditional bijinga style. He retired as a photographer in 1914.
