An old engraving from the River Thames showing the construction of Westminster Bridge, London, England, UK in the 1740s. For over 600 years (at least 1129–1729), the nearest Thames bridge to London Bridge was at Kingston. A bridge at Westminster was proposed in 1664. It was eventually built between 1739 and 1750, under the supervision of the Swiss engineer Charles Labelye. The bridge opened on 18 November 1750. Westminster Bridge assisted the expanding West End to the developing South London. This bridge was replaced by the current one in 1862.

An old engraving of the Old London Bridge Waterworks in the early 1700s. The wheel was built by George Sorocold, c 1700. It was 20 feet in diameter and had 26 blades 14 feet long. It drove eight pumps by means of crankshafts and rocking beams and could raise more than 2,500 tons of water 120 feet high per day. The water wheel could be raised or lowered as the level of the Thames changed as the axles were mounted on pivoted levers. There were four water wheels on the Old London Bridge supplying water to the city.

An old engraving from the River Thames showing the Custom House, City of London, England, UK in the 1600s. Merchant ships are on the river and in front of the building are wooden cranes. The site was long known as ‘Wool Quay’ and a custom house levied duty payable on exported wool. Around 1380, one John Churchman built a custom house there. It remained in use until 1559. Its replacement (shown here) was erected under the direction of William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, the Lord High Treasurer. This structure was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.

An old engraving of a Thames fire-fighting barge or boat, LFE 20, in Victorian times, London, England, UK. In London individual insurance companies established fire-fighting units to tackle fires in buildings that each company insured. They co-operated to form the London Fire (Engine) Establishment (LFEE or LFE) in 1833 under the leadership of James Braidwood. One mode of tackling fires along the River Thames was by fire-boat. The fire insurance companies informed the government it was not commercially viable to fight fires and in 1866 the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) came into being.

The River Fleet is the largest of London's subterranean rivers. Its headwaters are two streams on Hampstead Heath, each of which was dammed into a series of ponds—the Hampstead Ponds and the Highgate Ponds—in the 18th century. At the southern edge of Hampstead Heath these descend underground as sewers and join in Camden Town. The waters flow 4 miles from the ponds along the Fleet Ditch to the River Thames.

Located in the Parish of Bray, Berkshire, England. It was made famous (or infamous!) in the popular ballad, the parish is widely known, because of the turncoat ways of the Vicar of Bray.

A Royal Aquatic Procession on the River Thames passing the Palace of Whitehall (or Palace of White Hall) at Westminster, Middlesex, was the main residence of the English monarchs from 1530 until 1698, when most of its structures, except for Inigo Jones's Banqueting House of 1622, were destroyed by fire. The palace gives its name, Whitehall, to the street on which many of the current administrative buildings of the present-day British government are situated, and hence metonymically to the central government itself.

The Folly, a floating coffee-house on the River Thames, opposite Somerset House. London of the 17th and 18th century, was home to an eclectic and thriving coffee drinking scene. Those early coffeehouses were socially inclusive spaces where lords sat cheek-by-jowl with fishmongers and where butchers trumped baronets in philosophical debates. In London, where there were more coffeehouses than any other city in the western world, save Constantinople, workmen habitually begin the day by going to coffee-rooms to read the latest news.
In London, where there were more coffeehouses than any other city in the western world, save Constantinople, workmen habitually begin the day by going to coffee-rooms to read the latest news. https://www.alamy.com/licenses-and-pricing/?v=1 https://www.alamy.com/the-folly-a-floating-coffee-house-on-the-river-thames-opposite-somerset-house-london-of-the-17th-and-18th-century-was-home-to-an-eclectic-and-thriving-coffee-drinking-scene-those-early-coffeehouses-were-socially-inclusive-spaces-where-lords-sat-cheek-by-jowl-with-fishmongers-and-where-butchers-trumped-baronets-in-philosophical-debates-in-london-where-there-were-more-coffeehouses-than-any-other-city-in-the-western-world-save-constantinople-workmen-habitually-begin-the-day-by-going-to-coffee-rooms-to-read-the-latest-news-image234415088.html

Around 1380, one John Churchman built a custom house on a site on the banks of the River Thames, known as Wool Quay to collect dues for the City of London, England. In 1382 the Crown came to an agreement to use its facilities. It remained in use until 1559, the freehold passing through various hands. A replacement was erected under the direction of William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester, the Lord High Treasurer in the 17th Century but it was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.

Following a multitude of ad-hoc firefighting arrangements and the Great Fire of London, various insurance companies established firefighting units to tackle fires that occurred in buildings that their respective companies insured. As demands grew on the primitive firefighting units they began to coordinate and co-operate with each other until, on 1 January 1833, the London Fire Engine Establishment was formed under the leadership of James Braidwood; one mode of fire fighting was the barge-like ship moored in the River Thames.

Wolsey's Hall in Hampton Court Palace in the borough of Richmond upon Thames, south west and upstream of central London on the River Thames. Building of the palace began in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a favourite of King Henry VIII. In 1529, as Wolsey fell from favour, the Cardinal gifted the palace to the King to check his disgrace; Henry VIII later enlarged it. Along with St James's Palace, it is one of only two surviving palaces out of the many owned by King Henry VIII.

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, aka the Gunpowder Treason Plot, or the Jesuit Treason was a failed assassination attempt against King James I by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby. The plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605, as the prelude to a popular revolt in the Midlands. The plotters hired Catesby's lodgings in Lambeth, on the opposite bank of the Thames, from where their stored gunpowder and other supplies could be conveniently rowed across each night.

The Thames Tunnel is an underwater tunnel, built beneath the River Thames in London, connecting Rotherhithe and Wapping. It measures 1,300 feet long, running at a depth of 75 feet below the river surface measured at high tide. It was the first tunnel known to have been constructed successfully underneath a navigable river and was built between 1825 and 1843 using Marc Isambard Brunel's and Thomas Cochrane's newly invented tunnelling shield technology, by Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It was originally designed for horse-drawn carriages, but was never used for that purpose.

Essex House, fronting the Strand in London was originally called Leicester House. Backing on to the River Thames, it was built around 1575 for Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and was renamed Essex House by his stepson, Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, (1565-1601), an English nobleman, general and a favourite of Elizabeth I. In 1601 he marched with a party of nobles (some later involved in the Gunpowder Plot) and made an unsuccessful attempt to force an audience with the Queen. He surrendered after Crown forces besieged Essex House and was executed for treason in 1601.
