A Tyger (A Recumbent Leopard by a Tree) May 1, 1788 George Stubbs British Stubbs actually titled this print 'A Tyger,' the inclusive late-eighteenth century term for tigers, cheetahs, and leopards. After studying the animal in an English menagerie, he placed it in an expansive, light-saturated landscape. The artist etched the plate himself, using roulette work to evoke the distant haze and to draw evocative visual connections between the spotted patterns of fur, bark, rocks, and speckled overhanging leaves..
