A Lockheed F-104 Starfighter supersonic jet plane is mounted on the side of the SKETCH Foundation Gallery of Air and Space Exhibits building at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California, USA. The U.S. Air Force procured about 300 Starfighters following the F-104's initial flight in 1954. It was the first aircraft to fly at twice the speed of sound and set a world speed record of 1,404 mph in 1959. That was followed a year later by a world altitude record of 103,395 feet. The 1984 building that supports the plane is first major public work by acclaimed architect Frank Gehry.

When aircraft fly faster than the speed of sound, shockwaves travel away from the airplane, and are heard on the ground as a sonic boom. NASA are studying shockwaves to make sonic booms quieter, allowing supersonic flight over land.

Said to have flown at approximately twice the speed of sound, the trainer version of Britain's fastest all-weather jet fighter is on order for the Royal Air Force. It will be delivered with provision for a full weapon system so that it can also be used as an operational aircraft. Part of the weapon system, two firestreak guided missiles are shown on either side of the fuselage.
