The ATDA and Gemini 9 spacecraft are 66.5 feet (20.3 m). apart. Failure of the docking adapter protective cover to fully separate on the ATDA prevented the docking of the two spacecraft. The ATDA was described by the Gemini 9 crew as an 'angry alligator'.

The Gimbal Rig, formally called MASTIF or Multiple Axis Space Test Inertia Facility, was used to train the Mercury 7 astronauts to control the spin of a tumbling spacecraft. As part of a privately funded initiative Jerrie Cobb was the first woman to pass all three phases of the Mercury astronaut screening program. April 6, 1960

Vostok 4 was a Soviet space program mission which was launched in August 1962, a day after Vostok 3; the first time that more than one crewed spacecraft were in orbit at the same time.
