Chief of Clan Campbell, a prominent figure in Scottish politics and a Royalist supporter, he fell under suspicion due to his hereditary judicial powers in the Highlands and his strong Presbyterian beliefs. Condemned to death in 168, he escaped. Following the accession of Charles' brother to the throne as James II in 1685, Argyll returned to Scotland in an attempt to depose James, but his rising failed he was captured and beheaded.
