Stuart was a relentless rogue, con man and manufacturer of counterfeit bank bills & coins, who wreaked havoc wherever he went. He was also an immodest (and possibly violent) self publicist who published his memoirs of his criminal career in his book 'Sketches of the life of William Stuart, the first and most celebrated counterfeiter of Connecticut'. He also conspired with a mulatto to repeatedly sell him into slavery, only to help him escape. He also sold horses which he stole back.
