RMMP7NNR–Original caption: “Dutch Vessels in a Strong Breeze”. English: A number of vessels are shown moving briskly through the waves in a strong breeze. The boat, on the left, is probably a kaag, designed for use on inland waterways, with the leeboard visible. It flies the Dutch flag. A group of figures sits in the stern and another group in the bow including a figure dressed in red. Kaags were often used as ferries in the Zuider Zee which conveyed cargo and people to and from seagoing ships. The two focal kaags, filled with passengers, are very finely executed and are testament to Porcellis’ skill

RFP57RBA–Countless sampans that moved goods and other cargo from city shores to seagoing ships were photographed in 1972 crowding the quays along the Singapore River in Singapore, a small island nation in Southeast Asia. In 1983 these small flat-bottomed wooden boats were banned from the Singapore River as part of a campaign to clean up its waters. Nowadays the few remaining vessels are used mostly for fishing and sightseeing rides and can be found along the coastal areas of mainland Singapore and the surrounding islands. Historical photograph.
RM2B4JRX7–Lake Mälaren, also called Lake Mälar, lake in eastern Sweden, located just west of Stockholm, which lies at the lake–€™s junction with Salt Bay, an arm of the Baltic Sea. At one time Lake Mälaren was a bay of the Baltic, and seagoing vessels using it were able to sail far into the interior of Sweden. Because of movements of Earth–€™s crust, however, the rock barrier at the mouth of the bay had become so shallow by about 1200 that ships had to unload near the entrance, and the bay became a lake.
