Above them hang the landing barges that will soon be used to carry Marines to a hostile beach. WW II, c. 1942 photo. Assault transport ships do not beach themselves on a beach, or float to a landing dock. They must lower all landing barges into the ocean, and Marines then climb down into the barges, which carry them to the battle beaches.
