George Stephenson was a British engineer often called the 'Father of Railways'. His rail gauge ('Stephenson gauge) was the basis for the standard gauge used by most of the world's railways. Stephenson's 'Rocket' won the Rainhill Trials held by the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1829 for demonstration of improved steam locomotive designs. Rocket was the most advanced loco and became the template for most steam locomotives.
