RM2ARW8DB–The High Level Bridge is a road and railway bridge spanning the River Tyne between Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead in North East England. It was designed by Robert Stephenson to form a rail link towards Scotland for the developing English railway network; a carriageway for road vehicles and pedestrians was incorporated to generate additional revenue and opened in 1849. The hydraulic Swing Bridge (behind) was designed and paid for by engineer William George Armstrong (1810- 1900), with work beginning in 1873. It was opened for road and river traffic in 1876.
