Cotton's Fishing House on the banks of the River Dove. The structure was built by the poet Charles Cotton at Beresford Hall, near the Derbyshire Peak District. His father, Charles Cotton the Elder, was a friend of Ben Jonson, John Selden and Izaak Walton. His friendship with Izaak Walton began about 1655, and Cotton contributed a section 'Instructions how to angle for a trout or grayling in a clear stream', to Walton's The Compleat Angler; the additions consisted of twelve chapters on fishing in clear water, which he understood largely but not exclusively to be fly fishing.

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, aka the Gunpowder Treason Plot, or the Jesuit Treason was a failed assassination attempt against King James I by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby. The plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605, as the prelude to a popular revolt in the Midlands. The plotters hired Catesby's lodgings in Lambeth, on the opposite bank of the Thames, from where their stored gunpowder and other supplies could be conveniently rowed across each night.

Essex House, fronting the Strand in London was originally called Leicester House. Backing on to the River Thames, it was built around 1575 for Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, and was renamed Essex House by his stepson, Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, (1565-1601), an English nobleman, general and a favourite of Elizabeth I. In 1601 he marched with a party of nobles (some later involved in the Gunpowder Plot) and made an unsuccessful attempt to force an audience with the Queen. He surrendered after Crown forces besieged Essex House and was executed for treason in 1601.

He surrendered after Crown forces besieged Essex House and was executed for treason in 1601. https://www.alamy.com/licenses-and-pricing/?v=1 https://www.alamy.com/essex-house-fronting-the-strand-in-london-was-originally-called-leicester-house-backing-on-to-the-river-thames-it-was-built-around-1575-for-robert-dudley-earl-of-leicester-and-was-renamed-essex-house-by-his-stepson-robert-devereux-2nd-earl-of-essex-1565-1601-an-english-nobleman-general-and-a-favourite-of-elizabeth-i-in-1601-he-marched-with-a-party-of-nobles-some-later-involved-in-the-gunpowder-plot-and-made-an-unsuccessful-attempt-to-force-an-audience-with-the-queen-he-surrendered-after-crown-forces-besieged-essex-house-and-was-executed-for-treason-in-1601-image214914648.html

On the east side of the Isle of Dogs, Blackwall, London, is Folly Wall, a reminder of Thomas Davers, son of a famous admiral who decided to build a small fort on this spot “at great expense”. Considering the Isle of Dogs was largely uninhabited at the time this seemed an odd undertaking and after running into financial difficulties Thomas Davers sold his folly in 1754. Shortly afterwards Thomas Davers ended his own life by drowning himself in the Thames. A few years the property was turned into the Folly House or Folly House Tavern and became well known as a drinking establishment.

The Folly, a floating coffee-house on the River Thames, opposite Somerset House. London of the 17th and 18th century, was home to an eclectic and thriving coffee drinking scene. Those early coffeehouses were socially inclusive spaces where lords sat cheek-by-jowl with fishmongers and where butchers trumped baronets in philosophical debates. In London, where there were more coffeehouses than any other city in the western world, save Constantinople, workmen habitually begin the day by going to coffee-rooms to read the latest news.

York House in the Strand in London was built as the London home of the Bishops of Norwich not later than 1237, and around 300 years later it was acquired by King Henry VIII. It came to be known as York House when it was granted to the Archbishop of York in 1556 and retained that name for the rest of its existence. In the 1620s it was acquired by the royal favourite George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, and after an interlude during the English Civil War it was returned to George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham who later sold it.

A Royal Aquatic Procession on the River Thames passing the Palace of Whitehall (or Palace of White Hall) at Westminster, Middlesex, was the main residence of the English monarchs from 1530 until 1698, when most of its structures, except for Inigo Jones's Banqueting House of 1622, were destroyed by fire. The palace gives its name, Whitehall, to the street on which many of the current administrative buildings of the present-day British government are situated, and hence metonymically to the central government itself.

Around 1380, one John Churchman built a custom house on a site on the banks of the River Thames, known as Wool Quay to collect dues for the City of London, England. In 1382 the Crown came to an agreement to use its facilities. It remained in use until 1559, the freehold passing through various hands.
