RFM5KGP2–This is a picture of a thorny seahorse (Hippocampus histrix: 10 cms.). The IUCN Red List indicates that it is vulnerable. It is found in the Indo-West Pacific, usually near sponges and soft corals. In common with other seahorse species, it is threatened because of over-fishing (it becomes trawl bycatch), pollution and coastal development. For protection, the bodies of all seahorses are covered with bony plates. RFM5PFMJ–This shows the tissues of a giant clam (Tridacna gigas). The species can grow to one metre in length, weigh 200 kilograms and live for 100 years. The image shows the patterns formed by multi-coloured colonies of single-celled dinoflagellate symbiotic algae in the mollusc's mantle. In exchange for a safe place to live, the algae provide the clam with sugars through photosynthesis. Sadly, giant clams are becoming rarer, due to the effects of global warming and pollution - and because their meat is highly prized by humans. The IUCN Red List indicates that it is vulnerable.
