The heir apparent to the English throne died before his father, so his son, Richard II, succeeded. He became the Duke of Cornwall in 1337, (the first English dukedom) and became Prince of Wales and a knight. He was one of the most successful English commanders during the Hundred Years' War. He married Joan , countess of Kent (his cousin) in 1361. He also used an alternative with, three ostrich feathers argent, described as his 'shield for peace'
