More than 700 patients with leprosy (Hansen's disease) had been isolated there by the time Damien arrived in 1873. He later suffered the same infectious disease and died in the colony in 1889. Father Damien was canonized a saint in the Catholic Church In 2009. His St. Joseph's Church has since been renamed St. Damien's Church.

Matsudaira Katamori, born Keinosuke, was a samurai who lived in the last days of the Edo period and the early to mid Meiji period. He was the 9th daimyo of the Aizu Domain and the Military Commissioner of Kyoto. Katamori fought against the new Meiji Government during the Boshin War, but was severely defeated at the Battle of Aizu. He was spared and released after years of house arrest, and he later became the Chief of the Toshogu Shrine.
