RMJRPF5H–Duke Paoa Kahanamoku (1890-1968), often simply referred to as 'The Duke', was a lengendary native Hawaiian surfer regarded as The Father of Modern Surfing. He was also a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming who competed in the 1912, 1920, and 1924 Summer Olympics, as well as being an alternate for the U.S. water polo team at the 1932 Olympics. Kahanamoku is included in the Swimming Hall of Fame, the Surfing Hall of Fame, and the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. (Pictured here c1924)

RM2HWX3X8–Scottish Olympic athlete Eric Liddell winning the British Empire vs. USA 1-mile relay at the International Athletics Meeting held at Stamford Bridge, London on Saturday, July 19, 1924, following the Paris Olympics. Due to personal convictions of his Christian faith, Liddell famously refused to run his favored 100 meters in the 1924 Olympics because the race was held on a Sunday. He instead competed in the 400 meter race, which he won. In 1925 Liddell returned to China (where he was born) and served as a missionary there until his death in 1945 in a Japanese civilian internment camp.
