RMMJ97DK–Flight of Matilda from Oxford Castle, December 1142, siege of Oxford, escaping across the ice, on way to safety at Wallingford, during the civil war known as the anarchy
RMMRJWGN–When Empress Matilda (1102 – 1167), also known as the Empress Maude, and daughter of King Henry I of England attemped to be crowned at Westminster Abbey in 1141, her plans collapsed in the face of bitter opposition from the London crowds. She retreated to the Castle in Oxford, a secure town, protected by walls, but Stephen stormed the town, trapping Matilda in the castle. Matilda sneaked out of the castle, crossed the icy river on foot and escaped to safety at Wallingford.

RMKTT7HB–Oxford Castle was an 11th Century Norman medieval castle on the western side of central Oxford where it played an important role in the conflict of the Anarchy, a civil war in England between 1135 and 1153. The conflict was a succession crisis precipitated by the accidental death of William Adelin, the only legitimate son of Henry I, in 1120. Henry's attempts to install his daughter, the Empress Matilda, as his successor were unsuccessful and on Henry's death in 1135, his nephew Stephen of Blois seized the throne with the help of Stephen's brother, Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester.
