Developed by the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco) after the discovery of nearby oil in the 1930s, it grew to become a major Persian Gulf terminal of pipelines and artificial docks to accomodate large oil tankers. A petroleum refinery and storage tanks are also located there. Seen in the distance is a tall stack with a flame burning on top. This stack, called a flare, is a prominent feature of every oil refinery as it is an essential part of the plant's safety system.
