Son of the last Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, he became the ruler of the Principality of Nassau-Orange-Fulda after an agreement with Napoleon in 1803, who later deposed him in 1806. He was asked to become the Sovereign Prince of the United Netherlands after Napoleon's defeat in 1813, and proclaimed himself king in 1815.
