Colour illustration published in 1883 (3 years before installation) showing how the statue designed by Bartholdi would sit on its pedestal on Bedloes (now ‘Liberty’) Island. The illustration shows the statute as it looked in dull copper from its dedication in 1886 until the turn of the century when the now familiar blue green verdigris formed.
