The Roman Forum in Rome, Italy c.1960. This view is taken from next to the Curia Julia (Senate House) looking SE. The Temple of Divus Julius (Tempio del Divo Giulio) is left. Today the Forum has signage, maps fencing and smooth walkways – as here it was more challenging to walk and less managed and manicured. The statue in the foreground, a porphyry statue, a togatus (man in a toga), is now located inside the Curia Julia building. The Forum was the centre of day-to-day life in ancient Rome. This image is from an old amateur 35mm colour transparency – a vintage 1950/60s photograph.

Rene Just Hauy (February 28, 1743 - June 3, 1822) was a French mineralogist and ordained Roman Catholic Priest. His interest in crystallography resulted from the accidental breaking of a piece of calcite. Upon examination he discovered that they cleaved along straight planes that met at constant angles. He broke more pieces of calcite and found that, regardless of the original shape, the broken fragments were consistently rhombohedral which led to his theory of crystal structure.

Bireme bas relief of Villa Albani. Furnished with two banks of oars, which is the more common use of the term “bireme”, this ancient Roman vessel of war had two lines of oars on each side, placed in a diagonal position one above the other, as in the example form the marble bas-relief from the Villa Albani, each oar being worked by a single rower. Albani (later Villa Albani-Torlonia) is a villa in Rome, built on the Via Salaria for Cardinal Alessandro Albani. It was built between 1747 and 1767.

Julius Caesar helping himself to the treasures of the 4th Century BCE Temple of Saturn situated in the north west corner of the Roman Forum of Rome. Built in honour of Saturn it was the focal point of this ancient cult and stood on the site of the original temple dedicated in c. 497 BCE, which itself had replaced the god's first shrine, the Ara Saturni. In addition, during the Republic the temple also housed the public treasury (aerarium), a function it kept, albeit in a more limited function, in the Imperial period.

A Roman triumph was a spectacular victory celebration parade held in the city of Rome for a military commander who had won an important victory on the battlefield. Granted by the Senate, it was a lavish and entertaining propaganda spectacle which reminded the people of the glory of Rome and its military superiority above all other nations. Later, triumphs were reserved for the emperor only but they became ever more extravagant as sometimes unpopular rulers sought to ingratiate themselves with the people of Rome.

In the first century AD a Greek inventor known as Hero of Alexandria came up with a new invention that depended more on the mechanical interaction of heat and water. He invented a rocket-like device called an aeolipile, also known as Hero's engine. It used steam for propulsion. Hero mounted a sphere on top of a water kettle. A fire below the kettle turned the water into steam, and the gas traveled through the pipes to the sphere.

The Thirty Years' War was fought primarily in Central Europe between 1618 and 1648. Initially between various Protestant and Catholic states in the fragmented Holy Roman Empire, it gradually developed into a more general conflict involving most of the European great powers. These states employed mercenary armies, and the war became less about religion and more about the France–Habsburg rivalry for European political dominance and a Habsburg attempt to rebuild the imperial authority in Germany (Artist unknown)

The god of the sea, Poseidon, was so angered that Cassiopeia claimed Andromeda was more beautiful than the sea nymphs known as the Nereids that he ordered a sea monster to ravage Ethiopia. It would only be appeased if Andromeda was sacrificed to it. Andromeda was then stripped and chained to a rock (as seen in this 1890s illustration). The Greek hero Perseus rescued her. The tomb of Publius Cornelius Scipio, Roman general and later consul who is often regarded as one of the greatest military commanders. He probably died in 183 BC aged about 53 under suspicious circumstances, and it is possible that he either died of the lingering effects of the fever contracted while on campaign in 190 BC, or that he took his own life for causes unknown. He is said to have demanded that his body be buried away from his ungrateful city, and the Emperor Augustus is said to have visited his tomb in Liternum, southern central Italy, more than 150 years later.
