When Sergeant Michael O'Leary won his Victoria Cross for bravery, the award was used to encourage Irish men to enlist and and serve on the Western Front. At the outbreak of war, most Irish people, regardless of political affiliation, supported the war in much the same way as their British counterparts, and both nationalist and unionist leaders initially backed the British war effort. The posters had a remarkable ability to inspire, inform, and persuade volunteers.
