The estate was seized by the Crown because the Gordons were Dissenters, Covenanters and rebels. James Brown ( of the department store Affleck and Brown of Manchester) bought the entire estate for £14,000 in 1894 and supposedly based his new building on Warwick Castle. It was completed around 1906 and is often referred to in historical documents as 'The Toy Fort'. The derelict building called a 'folly' was rebuilt by new owners Baron & Lady Twynehame in 2001.
