RFP95YK6–A close-up picture of the head of the aptly named crocodilefish (Papilloculiceps longiceps: whole fish 60 cms.). An ambush predator, it lurks on the substrate, using its highly effective camouflage to remain undetected by smaller fish, which it engulfs with a fast strike. The image shows the remarkable lappets which cover the fish's eyes; an unusual camouflage device to ensure that the irises are not readily visible to passing prey. The species is found in the western Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea - and the Mediterranean having swum via the Suez Canal. Image near Hurghada, Egypt.
