The failure to preserve records of the rebuild means little is known how much of the current building is genuinely mediæval and how much is Victorian pastiche.

It was sometimes referred to as Jeu de Volant, an attempt by the upper classes to distance themselves from similar games played by their working class counterparts. The early sport related to that of modern badminton. The bats were the BATtledores and the object of the game was to pass the shuttlecock backwards & forwards between players without it falling to the ground.
