RMHE27RB–Following the Battle of Lewes during the Second Barons' War on 14 May 1264, Prince Edward (1239 – 1307) and his cousin Henry of Almain were given up as hostages to Montfort. He remained in captivity until March, until 28 May, when he managed to escape his custodians and joined up with the Earl of Gloucester, who had recently defected to the King's side.

RMMX08CN–The Battle of Lewes in Sussex on 14 May 1264 was one of two main battles of the Second Barons' War and marked the high point of the career of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, to make him 'uncrowned King of England'. Henry III left the safety of Lewes Castle to engage the Barons in battle and was initially successful, his son Prince Edward routing part of the baronial army with a cavalry charge. Edward pursued them and left Henry's men exposed. The royalists fled back to the castle and the King was forced to sign the Mise of Lewes, ceding powers to Montfort.
