He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross of Nazi Germany. Graffen was taken prisoner in May 1945 by the American US 85th Infantry Division near Belluno, Italy, and was released in March 1948.

RMPD6H9A–Image from the photo album of Oberleutnant Oscar Müller of Kampfgeschwader 1: Major Herbert Lorch, appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./KG 1 in July 1942, celebrates his mission tally. He was killed on 19th August 1942 while holding the temporary position of Geschwaderkommodore following the loss of Oberstleutnant Peter Schemmel just five days before. Lorch was posthumously awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on 5th January 1943.
