With its source in the central Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the 1,450-mile-long river flows generally southwest across the Colorado Plateau and through the Grand Canyon. Up until the mid-19th century, the Colorado river remained largely unknown until 1869, when Civil War veteran John Wesley Powell led an exploratory expedition.

RMHEWJNX–Glen Canyon Nation Recreation Area, established by Congress in 1972, is the home of Lake Powell. The area is comprised of 1.25 million acres with the lake occupying only 13%, or 161,390 acres, of the total area, which leaves a lot to be explored by four-wheel drive or on foot.
