RMG5MG99–The Fairey Delta II plane, which set a new world air speed record of 1,132 miles an hour, was piloted by Lionel Peter Twiss over the 15-25 kilometre course near Chichester and Ford, Sussex. The new record was disclosed in a Royal Aero Club statement, which said figures were subject to official confirmation. The Fairey Delta II, known as the Droop Snoot from its appearance, has been described as Britain's most advanced research aircraft. Mr Twiss, a wartime DSC and bar, was the first to pilot the Fairey Delta II in 1954.

This war followed the First Indochina War and was fought between North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the U.S.
