It is found in the Indo-West Pacific, usually near sponges and soft corals. In common with other seahorse species, it is threatened because of over-fishing (it becomes trawl bycatch), pollution and coastal development. For protection, the bodies of all seahorses are covered with bony plates. In this instance, many of these plates are overlaid with an encrustation of white bryozoans, which helps to camouflage the animal. Photographed in northern Sulawesi waters, Indonesia.
