'Birth Place of Dr. Watts', c1861. View of French Street, Southampton, Hampshire, home of Isaac Watts (1674-1748), English Christian minister, hymn writer, theologian, and logician. The family home was at Hampton Court, a large house on the east side of French Street (since demolished). Hampton Court is often cited as Watts' birthplace, but it is more likely that he was born in Above Bar Street, the family moving to French Street soon after his birth. Watts is known as the composer of numerous hymns, many of which remain in use today and have been translated into numerous languages.
