An incident during the Battle of Castlebar, also known as the Castlebar Races, August 27, 1898, near Castlebar, County Mayo. United Irishmen and French troops marched to take Castlebar. French soldiers attempting to take the jailhouse were confronted by a lone Highlander who fought to the death, but not before killing five French soldiers.
