He is probably an archdruid, who presided over important ceremonies. A druid was a religious leader in ancient pagan Celtic cultures. The druids appear in some of the medieval stories where they were portrayed as sorcerers who opposed Christianity. With the Celtic revival of the 18th and 19th centuries, neo-pagan groups were founded based on ideas about the ancient druids, a movement known as Neo-Druidism.
