King Richard II meeting Henry Bolingbroke, Earl of Derby in Flint Castle in North Wales. In 1397 Richard II exiled his cousin Henry Bolingbroke, heir to a vast Lancastrian inheritance. When Bolingbroke's father, John of Gaunt, died in 1399 the King seized his estates, then departed on a military campaign in Ireland. Henry returned from exile to reclaim his lands, but finding little support for Richard and altered his plans to seize the throne. When King Richard landed in Wales he was captured and held in Flint Castle. Following negotiations Richard abdicated on 19 August 1399.
