Carriès made an important series of masks, inspired by Japanese Noh theater and the gargoyles and carved faces on Gothic church architecture. His stoneware flasks with faces are an offshoot of this production. The bearded face as a motif on a water jug has its origins in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century German stoneware vessels known as Beardman or Bellarmine jugs.

RME0Y2GM–Sep. 04, 1968 - Two seats from Glazed Pottery: Stone throwing is definitely Not recommended in the garden of Mr. Robert McGuffie's country cottage. For in it are two seats - made from glazed pottery. Mr. McGuffie found the seats when he moved into Rose Cottage, at Whitrigg, near Torpenhow (Cumberland). Until he cleared the weeds which covered them he thought they were wooden. The seats each weigh two hundred weight, and carries the date 1869. Mr. McGuffie is trying to trace their origin. Photo shows Pictured here in the two seat are Derek and Diane Smithson, of Hereford House, Ireby.
