All of the family and quite a few of the deceased one's neighbours and friends would gather at the house. The body was usually in an open coffin in the parlor of the house or living room with lots of food and drink to be consumed. People would come and socialize and remember the departed person’s life. It was the traditional Irish way of celebrating one’s life and ensuring that they had a good send off.

Kunstler was an active member of the National Lawyers Guild, a board member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the co-founder of the Law Center for Constitutional Rights, the 'leading gathering place for radical lawyers in the country.' Kunstler's defense of the Chicago Seven from 1969 to 1970 led The New York Times to label him 'the country's most controversial and, perhaps, its best-known lawyer'.
