A late 19th Century illustration of the surrender of King John II of France to Edward of Woodstock, aka the Black Prince (1330-1376), the eldest son of King Edward III of England. In 1346 Prince Edward commanded the vanguard at the Battle of Crécy, his father intentionally leaving him to win the battle. He offered terms of peace to King John II of France, who had outflanked him near Poitiers, but refused to surrender himself as the price of their acceptance. This led to the Battle of Poitiers, where his army routed the French and took King John prisoner.

A late 19th Century illustration of the opening of the Suez Canal under French control in November 1869. The canal passes through the Isthmus of Suez offering vessels a direct route between the North Atlantic and northern Indian oceans via the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, avoiding the South Atlantic and southern Indian oceans and reducing the journey distance from the Arabian Sea to London by approximately 8,900 kilometres (5,500 miles). The canal opened with an audience of royalty and a procession of ships on the morning of 17 November.
