The port belonged to the Monastery of Oliwa of the Cistercian Order in the formerly independent city of Oliwa, today a district of Gdansk. Already after the first partition of Poland in 1772, the port fell to Prussia and was thus separated from Danzig. In the 19th century, the small town Neufahrwasser was expanded with a barracks to military base. The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 attributed the port to the Free City of Danzig.
