Grace Darling was an English lighthouse keeper's daughter. who with her father William used a rowing boat to rescue 9 survivors (of a total of 62 people) from the shipwrecked Forfarshire in 1838. The paddle steamer ran aground on the Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland under conditions that were so bad a lifeboat rescue was difficult to attempt. The 23 year old and her father achieved national fame.She died of tuberculosis in 1842.

In 1838 Grace Darling and her father William Darling, a local lighthouse keeper, heroically rescued victims of the wreck of the SS 'Forfarshire' off the Farne Islands. They were first recorded in 651, when they became home to Saint Aidan, followed by Saint Cuthbert who died there in 687. The islands were used by hermits intermittently until the last hermit died on the islands in 1246. The islands are also associated with Grace Darling, daughter of the Longstone lighthouse-keeper William Darling, who both rescued nine people from the wreck of the Forfarshire in a strong gale and thick fog, the vessel having run aground

Hoylake’s very own pirate ship named after Grace Darling who aged 22 rowed out in a storm with her father to help survivors of the SS Forfarshire, wrecked off the Farne Islands in 1838. Since she was “berthed” on the rocks by the new Hoylake Lifeboat station in Summer 2013, hundreds of children (and grown-ups) have clambered over Grace and enjoyed her close-up and from afar.
